Karabari / Kingdom of Karabal

Kalabari

The Kalabari tribe is a tribe derived from the Ijo tribe (Niger-Congo language family, Ijoid language family) who moved from the area around the present Republic of Benan to the eastern part of the Niger Delta in present-day Nigeria, and speaks Ijaw.

Originally it was called Awome (tribe).

The name Kalabari comes from the name of their ancestor MEIN OWEI's son, PREBO KALABARI.

They were a fishing tribe until the arrival of the Portuguese, but when the slave trade began, they made wealth by trading with European countries like other tribes.

Also, when trade with the Portuguese began, Calabar moved to a new land, and the Portuguese later lived in the former town, leaving the name Calabar, and is now an Efik town.

Calabar, a town opened by the Ijaw people, is a town in the delta region at the mouth of the Niger River, near the border with Cameroon, in southeastern Nigeria. ) Is derived from spelling calabar.

The Portuguese wrote Calabar and read it as Calabar, but when the English settled in, it was pronounced Kalaba as it was, and the name of the town became Calabar as it is today.

Kingdom of Caraval

This kingdom, also known as the Kingdom of Efic, was built by the Ibibio (Niger-Congo) in the Cross River Delta region of the coastal area of southeastern Nigeria.

Efik was a branch of the Ibibio tribe, and the capital of the Kingdom of Calabar was located in Calabar, which is also the capital of the Efik town.

According to tradition, the Ibibio roots are Egyptian Jews, who reached the land via the present-day Republic of Sudan, Ethiopia, and established the Kingdom of Carabar in thousands of BC.

Many also believe that the Kingdom of Calabar is the Garden of Eden that appears in the Old Testament.

Records of this tribe / region only exist in the late 1800s during the colonial era, and the ones up to that point are oral traditions, with mixed theories.

In the Kingdom of Calabar, there is a secret society "Ekpe" by men who are still active, and they were closely related to the politics of the kingdom, such as enacting laws and having the king of Calabar as the head of the organization. ..

Considering the story of the Kalabar tribe above, Calabar is a town built by the Kalabar tribe, and Ibibio may have settled in that town and built the Kingdom of Calabar after they moved to another town. ..
